## Collins Street Specialist Centre – Dr Ricky Kumar
**Specialist Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon**
BHB (Auck) · MBChB (Auck) · BDS (Otago) · FRACDS (OMS)

## Clinical expertise

Collins Street Specialist Centre offers patients access to Dr Ricky Kumar through its Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery service. Dr Kumar is dually qualified in both medicine and dentistry, which gives him a surgical perspective that most maxillofacial surgeons simply don't have — he can assess and treat conditions affecting the mouth, jaws, and face with both the medical and dental picture in view simultaneously.

His clinical areas include:

- **Dento-alveolar surgery**, including the removal of complex and impacted wisdom teeth (third molars that haven't fully erupted or are sitting awkwardly within the jaw)
- **Dental implant surgery** — both the placement of implants and bone grafting procedures to rebuild jaw volume where needed
- **Oral pathology** — diagnosing and managing cysts, lesions, and tumours affecting the mouth and surrounding tissues
- **Facial trauma reconstruction** — restoring form and function following injuries to the facial skeleton
- **Paediatric maxillofacial surgery** (subspecialty interest) — surgical care tailored to children and adolescents
- **Corrective jaw surgery / orthognathic surgery** (subspecialty interest) — repositioning the upper and/or lower jaw to improve bite, function, and facial balance
- **TMJ (temporomandibular joint) surgery** (subspecialty interest) — surgical management of the jaw joint when conservative treatments haven't provided enough relief

Dr Kumar has a particular focus on paediatric and complex reconstructive cases, built through highly specialised fellowship training in both Melbourne and the United Kingdom.

## Training and qualifications

Dr Kumar's training spans two countries and three institutions. He completed his Bachelor of Health Sciences (BHB) and MBChB in Medicine at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, then went on to complete a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) at the University of Otago — one of the Southern Hemisphere's foremost dental schools. His specialist surgical training in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery was completed in Adelaide, culminating in Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (FRACDS OMS).

The FRACDS (OMS) is the recognised specialist qualification in oral and maxillofacial surgery across Australia and New Zealand, awarded only after a rigorous programme of hospital-based surgical training and formal examination — worth knowing for both patients and referring clinicians.

After his fellowship, Dr Kumar took on two post-fellowship positions in paediatric and reconstructive maxillofacial practice:

- **Paediatric Maxillofacial & Corrective Jaw Surgery Fellowship**, The Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne
- **Clinical Fellow in Paediatric Maxillofacial & TMJ Surgery**, Oxford University Hospitals, United Kingdom

These roles gave Dr Kumar deep, subspecialty-level experience in some of the most technically demanding areas of maxillofacial surgery — experience he brings directly to patients at Collins Street Specialist Centre.

## Hospital appointments

Dr Kumar holds consultant appointments across several of Melbourne's major public hospital networks:

- **Consultant Surgeon**, Royal Melbourne Hospital
- **Consultant Surgeon**, Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne
- **Consultant Surgeon**, Monash Health
- **Honorary Consultant**, The Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne

These appointments mean Dr Kumar works across both private specialist practice and the public hospital system, maintaining the breadth of clinical exposure that underpins quality specialist care.

## Awards and professional leadership

Dr Kumar's involvement in the specialty goes well beyond the operating theatre.

- **F.G. Christensen Medal** — awarded for outstanding results in the specialist surgical examinations, recognising the standard Dr Kumar achieved at the conclusion of his formal training
- **Secretary**, Victorian Branch, Australian & New Zealand Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons (ANZAOMS) — an active role in the professional body that supports and advances the specialty across Australia and New Zealand
- **Founder and Chief Organiser** — since 2012, Dr Kumar has led annual charity oral and maxillofacial operating missions to Fiji, providing surgical care to underserved communities across the Pacific region. It's a long-standing commitment that says something real about how he approaches the specialty.
