Collins Street Specialist Centre welcomes Dr David Austin, a specialist orthodontist whose training took him across two continents and includes Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh — one of the world's oldest surgical institutions, and a credential earned by examination rather than application.
Dr Austin treats patients of all ages. His clinical work covers the full range of orthodontic presentations, from straightforward alignment to cases requiring surgical coordination:
- Conventional metal and ceramic braces — effective and versatile for children, adolescents, and adults
- Invisalign clear aligner therapy — a removable, near-invisible alternative to fixed braces, available for mild through to complex cases
- Lingual braces — bonded to the inner, tongue-facing surface of the teeth, so completely invisible from the front

Training pathway
Dr Austin completed his Bachelor of Dental Science (BDSc) at the University of Melbourne in 2004, then pursued specialist orthodontic training at the University of Hong Kong, earning his Master of Dental Surgery in Orthodontics (MDS Orth) in 2007.
Concurrently, he achieved the Membership of the Faculty of Orthodontists, Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (MOrth RCS Edin) — awarded by examination and recognised internationally as an independently assessed standard of orthodontic competence.
After completing his formal training, Dr Austin spent a significant period in Shanghai delivering specialist care to an international expatriate population. Working across a broad range of patient presentations, dental backgrounds, and cultural contexts, that experience continues to shape how he approaches complex case management.
